Master Your Brew: Understanding the Different Coffee Grinding Levels

Why Grind Size Matters

Whether you’re making a rich espresso or a smooth French press, the grind size of your coffee beans can dramatically change your cup. Each brewing method demands a specific grind size to extract the best flavors, and understanding these levels can take your coffee game to the next level.

Coarse Grind (French Press, Cold Brew)

Coarse grinds are chunky and resemble sea salt. They’re perfect for slower extraction methods like French press or cold brew, where water has more time to draw out the flavors without making the coffee too bitter.

Medium Grind (Drip Coffee, Pour-over)

A medium grind is like sand, ideal for drip coffee makers and pour-over methods like Chemex or Hario V60. It provides a balanced extraction that highlights the subtle flavors of your coffee beans.

Fine Grind (Espresso, AeroPress)

A fine grind feels like powdered sugar and is essential for espresso or AeroPress with a short brew time. The small grind size allows for fast extraction, resulting in a strong, concentrated flavor.

Extra Fine Grind (Turkish Coffee)

Extra fine grinds are like flour and are used in Turkish coffee brewing. These grounds are so fine that they dissolve into the water, creating a rich, velvety drink.
